How it works

The quiz is a mirror, not a maze.

Every question is designed to surface a signal you already carry. Nothing here is random — here is exactly what the quiz does and why.

Step 1 — Pick what lights you up

You'll see a curated grid of 60 meaningful activities. These aren't career labels — they're primal, universal actions that release the same feel-good chemistry across cultures: teaching, building, healing, singing, leading, protecting, connecting people, solving puzzles, organizing, travelling, and so on.

Click every one that gives you real, sustained satisfaction. Not "I don't hate it." Not "I'm good at it." Real satisfaction — the kind that leaves you recharged, not drained. Pick as many as apply.

Step 2 — Trace the ancestral pattern

Most of what gives you deep satisfaction is inherited — programmed into your DNA by the generations behind you. For the optional ancestry step, you'll pick the activities that give (or gave) your mother, father, and grandparents the most satisfaction. Any overlap with your own picks is a validation signal.

If you don't know, you can skip. But if you do — even one accurate guess about a grandparent can meaningfully change the report.

Step 3 — Map the Four Keys

Purpose isn't just about what you like — it's what fills you up in four specific ways:

  • ✦

    Hope

Activities that make tomorrow feel worth waking up for.

  • ✦

    Security

Activities that make you feel strong, confident, and able to thrive.

  • ✦

    Value

Activities that make you feel important or valuable to others.

  • ✦

    Connection

Activities that make you feel part of something bigger than yourself.

For your top picks you'll go back through and mark which ones fulfill each of the Four Keys for you. The activities that fulfill all four are the closest to your true purpose — those are the ones we call your "gifts to share with the world."

Step 4 — Write your eulogy

Skip the resume. Write the paragraph you'd want a loved one to read out loud at your funeral — how you loved, what you built, who you were to the people around you.

This isn't morbid. It's the fastest known way to surface what actually matters to you underneath the noise. Ancient philosophers, modern grief coaches, and end-of-life nurses all converge on this exercise for the same reason: it strips out ego and leaves signal.

Step 5 — List your life goals

Add three to five specific goals — concrete things you want to accomplish, become, or experience. Not "be happy." Real, specific goals. We use these to run an alignment check against your top themes: which goals fit your purpose, and which ones are pulling you away from it.

Step 6 — Get your personalized report

The system scores your activities the same way the original whatismypurpose.org quiz has for years — 10 points per Four Keys hit, plus a validation flag for ancestral overlap — and then feeds the top themes, your eulogy, and your goals into a language model that generates a personalized report.

The report contains:

  • A one-sentence purpose statement, written for you.
  • Your top three purpose themes with what each one means for how you live.
  • A Four Keys signature reading.
  • Alignment analysis against your eulogy and goals.
  • One concrete next step to take this week.
  • Callings and warnings — what to say yes to, what to say no to.
